Recognizing Values, Culture, Spirituality, Happiness and Inner Development as Catalyst for Systemic Change

From August 31 to September 4, 2026, Shumei International joined nearly 400 participants from about 65 countries at the first-ever Global Conscious Food Systems Summit in Bhutan. Co-hosted by the Royal Government of Bhutan, the Conscious Food Systems Alliance, and the United Nations Development Programme, this historic summit brought together world leaders, academics, indigenous peoples, youth, farmers and food system practitioners to explore how we can transform our global food systems.

The Bhutan Summit marked a pivotal shift by demonstrating how consciousness can shape global responses to the world’s ongoing crises such as hunger, climate change, biodiversity loss and pollution. During the event, the Conscious Food Systems Framework was launched, providing a pathway on how to build resilient, regenerative, and equitable food systems that honor both people and Mother Earth.

During the Summit’s Opening Day, participants heard inspiring remarks from H.E. Lyonchhen Dasho Tshering Tobgay, Prime Minister of Bhutan; H.E. Dr. Harini Amarasuriya, Prime Minister of Sri Lanka; Mary Robinson, former President of Ireland; Ban Ki-moon, former United Nations Secretary-General; and Andrew Bovarnick, Founder of the Conscious Food Systems Alliance (CoFSA) and Global Head of the UNDP Food and Agricultural Commodity Systems Practice.

Speakers highlighted how cultivating consciousness can drive the change needed to transform food systems. Otto Scharmer, co-founder of the Presencing Institute, shared Ilya Prigogine’s insight that, “When a complex system is far from equilibrium, small islands of coherence in a sea of chaos have the capacity to shift the entire system to a higher order.”

Shumei International co-hosted a parallel session titled “CIRCLE OF TRUST: Cultivating Farmers’ Wellbeing from Soil to Soul.” Facilitated by Elise Buckle, Jessica Bockler, Aoife Franklyn, Ignacio Packer, and Marie-Antoinette, the session created a reflective space to listen deeply to the inner dimensions of farming. Participants explored how mental, emotional, and spiritual wellbeing is fundamental to agricultural transformation and establishing deep connection to Nature as a core element of conscious food systems. Shumei’s youth delegate reflected on her time with women farmers in Zambia, highlighting the profound impact of spirituality in their farming journey.

The four-day Summit explored many additional themes such as reconnecting with nature, food heritage preservation, indigenous wisdom, youth voices, conscious food production, mindful markets and conscious food policy. Shumei delegates also joined other participants in small group sharing circles. This was a powerful element of the Summit, which created safe spaces for discussion and facilitated personal reflection throughout the programming.

Being in Bhutan, we were reminded of the incredible transformative power of Nature. The majestic natural surroundings generously offered a sacred space for immersive participant engagement, meaningful collaboration and mapping a path forward. We are deeply grateful to the organizers and all involved for the opportunity to have participated in this pivotal gathering to activate the heart of food systems transformation and advance a new Conscious Food Systems Framework.
