Each year on March 20th, the UN celebrates International Day of Happiness, a day dedicated to recognizing how happiness and well-being are universal goals and aspirations for human beings worldwide. International Day of Happiness is also a moment to highlight the need for inclusivity and equity in our society and sustainable development that enables economic growth, eradicates poverty, and most importantly, promotes happiness and a sustainable future for all.
This year’s theme is “Happier Together,” which is centered around ‘happiness for the young, the old, and everyone in between.’ It reminds us that true happiness comes from our connection to each other and the world around us, regardless of age or background.
In celebration of International Day of Happiness, The Conscious Food Systems Alliance (CoFSA), convened by UNDP, is hosting a webinar on Cultivating Joy in Food Systems: A Consciousness Practice to Transform Food Systems. This event on Wednesday, March 20, will explore how joy can play a transformative role within our souls and food systems. Led by expert Liliana De Leo, attendees will delve into the practice of ‘laughter yoga’ and its potential to reshape food systems into more regenerative and resilient ones. Through interactive sessions, participants will also uncover practical applications of joy, such as ‘cooking with joy,’ and how such practices can infuse uplifting energy throughout those who work throughout the global food system.
Continuing the focus on happiness and well-being, CoFSA will host a virtual town hall session on Wednesday, March 27 on Farmers’ Well-being and Psychological Resilience. Shumei is a member of the CoFSA and will be participating in this town hall, contributing to the discussion, exploring how Natural Agriculture helps farmers build positive relationships with both nature and within themselves.
The Townhall aims to delve deeper into the well-being of farmers, exploring various themes in facilitated breakout groups. Topics to be discussed include the significance of natural farming for both the land and the farmers themselves, strategies for building psychological resilience within farmers’ organizations, and the vital role of mental health practitioners in supporting the well-being of those working in agriculture. Additionally, the session will address the challenges farmers face in crisis-affected contexts, emphasizing the importance of supporting their livelihoods and preserving their dignity during times of adversity.
These events serve as a reminder of the growing recognition of the interconnectedness between happiness and sustainable food systems. By cultivating joy and prioritizing the well-being of farmers, we can work towards creating a world where everyone has access to nutritious food and where both people and the planet thrive harmoniously.
On this International Day of Happiness, let’s recognize the intrinsic link between joy, well-being, and sustainable food systems, and join hands towards a happier, healthier, and more sustainable future for all.
