New Developments in Zambia

In 2015, the Natural Agriculture Development Program Zambia (NADPZ) celebrated the 10th anniversary of the Natural Agriculture Show in the Mbabala district. This show has brought together farmers and community members from throughout the region to showcase their produce and foster goodwill. In addition, they opened a new boarding house in Mbabala, which can accommodate up to 45 guests. It is one of the few facilities with electricity in this rural part of the country and will serve as a source of income for the farming cooperative.

In Pemba, another farming community, NADPZ opened a primary school with 30 kindergarten students. Governmental officers of Pemba attended the school opening in August, including the superintendent of education, who offered his support to provide teachers for the school as it expands. The school has a Natural Agriculture garden for students to grow their own food and to learn about farming. Outside of school hours, the classrooms double as a training facility for women farmers to learn new skills through activities, such as sewing the school uniforms. There are also plans to create an adult training program to prepare women farmers to become more successful business owners with courses in business, land management and production.

The new Natural Agriculture program in Chikanta has been growing gradually and in August 2015, they successfully completed the construction of a storage facility for their produce. Chief Chikanta of the Kalomo District and the office of the Chikanta Women Farmers held an official ceremony to celebrate this new and much-needed resource, which will also serve as a community meeting hall. Chief Chikanta met with Shumei, and expressed support for the Zambia project and Shumei’s local community work.

In the coming years, NADPZ is planning to expand their Natural Agriculture activities in Pemba, and for the first time, in neighboring countries Gambia and Malawi. In 2016, activities will include helping farmers to transition from cotton to rice farming, developing a Natural Agriculture App for farmers to access on their phones, establishing a partnership with The Peace Corps to send volunteers to their farming communities, and the expansion of the farmer training program to empower the next generation of Zambian farmers.
