Moving forward after UN Commission on Sustainable Development (CSD-19)

Shumei International recently participated in the UN Commission on Sustainable Development (CSD 19) at UN Headquarters in New York City from 2-13 May 2011.

The thematic issues of this policy session included: transportation, chemicals, waste management, mining and the 10 Year Framework of Programmes on Sustainable Consumption & Production Patterns. Secretary General Ban Ki Moon delivered the opening remarks at the Ministerial Dialogue during the high level segment. He urged delegates to make a firm commitment to a positive outcome of CSD 19. Unfortunately, despite Chair László Borbély’s emphasis on identifying concrete policy recommendations, measures and commitments for implementation, governments failed to adopt a consensus outcome document. Nevertheless Shumei remains positive that Rio+20 will help to energize the international community around sustainable development. Sustainable Consumption & Production (SCP) is a theme that resonates with our work. Humanity must do more with less and we cannot continue with business as usual. Our global consumption is beyond planetary boundaries and we must act together to create a shift in behaviors. A lifestyle in harmony with nature is much more aligned with sustainable patterns of consumption and production. Shumei’s work in promoting Natural Agriculture without the use of chemicals, fertilizers, pesticides or additives provides an alternative and sustainable approach to food production. We look forward to participating and contributing to Rio+20 to support a positive future for the planet.
