There is an urgent need to fundamentally transform our current agricultural and food systems approach. This session will explore reclaiming food democracy, the key to this transformation – seed and food sovereignty, fair trade, empowering smallholder farmers, rejuvenating indigenous and cultural knowledge and promotion of ecological farming methods that protect biodiversity while increasing nutrition and reducing poverty.
Such a transition can best be achieved through the development of new partnerships involving unprecedented cooperation at all levels. Adopting top-down as well as bottom-up strategies, it will include the introduction of enabling policy instruments which penalize practices that have damaging public heath and environmental outcomes and reward sustainable produced food to become more affordable.
