This year World Environment Day 2019 was dedicated to tackling air pollution. The theme recognized that nine out of ten people are affected by polluted air every day. The UN Environment invited people around the world to join the Mask Challenge to #BeatAirPollution and show leaders that the world wants to breathe clean air.
There are several actions that we can all do to #BeatAirPollution. For example, we can use public transportation, carpool, cycle, or walk in order to decrease our carbon emissions. Switching to a hybrid or electric car and turning off car engines also contribute to lowering emissions. However, many people do not recognize the power of sustainable agriculture in reducing air pollution.
Beating air pollution can also consist of composting organic food items and recycling non-organic trash to having more indoor plants. Supporting sustainable agriculture and composting produce can reduce methane and ammonia emissions which are released into the air by the burning of industrial food waste. Indoor plants on the other hand serve a living filters that can remove toxins and pollutants from the air. So when we think about actions to reduce air pollution, let us not forget about natural solutions and sustainable agriculture to help #BeatAirPollution.
