Each year, the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations observes World Food Day on October 16th to promote worldwide awareness about hunger and food security. The 2017 theme of World Food Day is Change the Future of Migration: Invest in Food Security and Rural Development. Organizers note that currently, more people have been forced to flee their homes than at any time since the Second World War. One crucial reason for such forced migration is the extreme changes in weather.
This year we have seen storms and hurricanes leave a trail of destruction in the Caribbean. There is no doubt climate is changing.
Extreme weather and changing climates are affecting food security and agriculture worldwide, threatening people’s well-being and livelihoods, especially in rural areas. Investing in food security and rural development by shifting to natural agriculture is one way to curb migration due to climate change, while increasing carbon sequestration to reverse the problem.
