On March 20th United Nations community celebrates the International Day of Happiness. The resolution for this day was initiated by Bhutan, the member state known for prioritizing Gross National Happiness over Gross National Product. Shumei recognizes that our collective efforts towards achieving of the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) contribute to the health, wellbeing and ultimately long-term happiness of humankind.
More importantly, harmony with Nature plays a key role in increasing our overall happiness. When we cultivate a deep relationship with Nature that is built on respect and gratitude, this appreciation and respect trickles out into other parts of life, into our relationships with others and ourselves. Shumei Natural Agriculture teaches us to trust and listen to Nature and to live in harmony with Nature. When we do this, we are creating harmony and peace within our own relationships and we learn to listen to others and find a place of common understanding.
As we reflect on this year’s International Day of Happiness, we are reminded to look for that silver lining in the situations we find ourselves in today. This past year with the global COVID-19 pandemic has impacted the lives and livelihoods of billions of people around the planet. We are reminded to be grateful for what we have and to work toward long-term solutions in harmony with Nature that will enable us to live more fulfilling and happy lives. This is a type of happiness that is lasting, and sustainable, because Nature always gives back to us more than we expect to receive.
